ACUPRESSURE
Asian Bodywork Therapy

Asian bodywork therapy uses traditional techniques and treatment strategies to affect and balance the energetic system for treating the human body, emotions, mind, energy field and spirit for the promotion, maintenance and restoration of health.

ABT uses acupressure, stretches, movement and compression to:

  • Relieve stress, pain and muscular tension
  • Improve joint mobility and range of motion
  • Relieve soreness and stiffness of the neck, arms, and shoulders–a common American condition (Desk Syndrome)
  • Improve lymphatic flow, blood circulation, and chi (energy) movement to help start the healing process
  • Reduce anxiety, depression, insomnia, and headaches

There are many forms of Asian bodywork. What they have in common is their foundation in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Asian bodywork therapy differs in their use of specific techniques to balance energy.

Below you'll find brief descriptions of these styles.

Acupressure is a therapeutic bodywork technique used to balance the body’s energy levels. An acupressurist will move one hand along a series of points, applying pressure to specific areas, while the other hand is on a "home-base" point, selected for its ability to assist the other points in releasing tension and promoting circulation of blood and Qi.

Tui Na is an active form of bodywork where the practitioner uses a series of pressing, tapping, and kneading that removes blockages along the meridians of the body and stimulates the flow of Qi and blood to promote healing. It leaves you feeling both relaxed and invigorated.  Imbalances are addressed using soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, and gentle pressure on energy points.

Zen Shiatsu is a style of bodywork characterized by the theory of Kyo-Jitsu, its physical and psychological manifestations and its application to abdominal diagnosis. Zen Shiatsu theory is based on an extended meridian system that includes, as well as expands, the location of the traditional acupuncture meridians. The focus of a Zen Shiatsu session is on the use of meridian lines rather than on specific points. In addition, Zen Shiatsu does not adhere to a fixed sequence or set of methods that are applied to all. It utilizes appropriate methods for the unique pattern of each individual.

Treatments typically last 60 minutes

Assessment (5-10 minutes)

  • In the first 15 minutes or so, your Asian Bodywork Practitioner will follow up on the information on your health history questionnaire and ask questions about your health and the problems you are having.
  • The diagnosis will include looking at your tongue and checking your pulses on both wrists and possibly Hara (stomach) diagnosis. For this reason, it is best if you do not come to your appointment on a full or empty stomach.
  • These assessment techniques will help the practitioner find which of the meridians need to be treated to stimulate the healing response of the client, so that the meridian energy system of the client is normalized.

 Tui Na (20-25 minutes)

  • This initial massage prepares the body to receive the work with specific points, increasing the effectiveness of the work. Ultimately it is this deeply relaxed state that allows us to reduce stress and strengthen the body's natural healing ability.

Acupressure (30 minutes)

  • Receiving Acupressure with Tui Na will help your body re-establish, correct and strengthen its harmonios flow of consciousness, energy and body fluids, allowing your body-mind-spirit to regain the confidence, trust and power that it needs to heal itself.

Q&A (5 minutes)

  • At the end of the rest, there will be an opportunity to discuss any questions you may have regarding session.
  • Your practitioner may describe meditations, grounding techniques, Qi Gong or stretching exercises to assist with your ongoing healing.

 After The Treatment

  • Plan to take it easy after your treatment.
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Sometimes after receiving a session you may feel slightly lightheaded. If that is the case, please sit until you feel better. In a few minutes you will feel relaxed and clear-headed.
  •  Journal experience or dreams that may follow within a few days

Very rarely, symptoms may become worse for a while following a session. This is often a sign that previously dormant conditions are being awakened so that healing may occur. This should pass quickly. If you have any questions or concerns at any time, please contact us at (408) 644-7896.

How Can Acupressure Therapy Help?

There are many different ways to promote balanced health, including healthy diet, exercise, and alternative treatments like acupressure.  Originating in Chinese medicine, acupressure utilizes stimulation of a trained practitioners' fingertips, knuckles or special instruments to stimulate certain points of energy meridians on one’s body.

Pressing these pressure points can eliminate stress and pain as it promotes neurological flow to various organs, glands and tissues with the purpose of returning the body to a healthy condition.

There are many fans of acupressure, even outside of the alternative medical community. These days, even traditional medical doctors are recommending alternative therapies like massage, acupuncture, and acupressure to manage pain and treat symptoms.

Acupressure has been shown to help with the following conditions
  • Women transitions (Menopause, PMS, menstrual issues and other hormonal problems)
  • Infertility
  • Breast Cancer (helps in alleviating the nausea caused by chemotherapy)
  • Diabetes (Type II)
  • Circulatory problems
  • Migraines
  • Addictions—drug, alcohol, food, etc.
  • Arthritis
  • Body and back pain
  • Depression, anxiety and other emotional and mental problems

The safety of acupressure is well-known as even pregnant women and seriously ill patients can safely utilize the treatment to promote healing and well-being. In fact, acupressure is a safe, medication-free way women can relive pain during labor and childbirth.

The treatment has the advantage of being non-invasive and drug-free, which means patients can avoid pharmaceutical side effects and the high costs of more traditional Western medical treatments. Because acupressure is a form of holistic medicine, the focus is on curing the disease or illness at the source, rather than only treating symptoms.

While many people think of acupressure as a technique to treat a specific symptom or condition, it is becoming more popular as a way to strengthen immune systems. Acupressure can help people struggling with chronic illness or disease to obtain the boost they need to overcome and heal.
